South County Septic and Excavation Services handles excavation for residential and commercial projects across Rhode Island. We dig foundation holes, utility trenches, generator pads and driveway cuts. When the foundation or the pipe is in, we backfill and rough grade around it. North Kingstown sits at the center of our service area, which covers the whole state.
Excavation is the digging itself: the hole for a foundation or the trench for a buried line. Taking a raw lot to a graded, drained building site is our site work. The dig for a new septic system is part of septic system installation in North Kingstown. Call or text (401) 474-8926, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

A foundation dig starts with the plan. The plan sets the footprint and the footing depth, and stakes mark the corners on the ground. We dig the hole a little wider than the walls, so there is room to set the forms. The bottom gets checked against the plan before any concrete goes in.
Additions and bulkheads mean digging beside a house that people live in. The old footing has to stay supported, and buried lines often run close to the walls. That digging goes slower, and the quote reflects it.
After the walls cure and the dampproofing goes on, the hole gets backfilled. When the plan calls for footing drains, they go in before the backfill. Then we rough grade the soil so it slopes away from the house.
A new home needs a water service line from the meter or the well. The sewer lateral runs to the street or to the septic tank. Those trenches are part of water line repair and installation and sewer line repair. We dig to the grades on the plan, then bed and backfill around the pipe.
State soil guidance names loose glacial till as the most widespread soil material west of Narragansett Bay. It mixes sand, gravel, cobbles and stones. Compact till, often called hardpan, is very dense and slow to dig, even by machine. Old stone walls on a lot are one clue to till ground.
Outwash plains are different: layered sand and gravel with few stones. That ground is loose, and the walls of a hole can cave in. Federal OSHA rules require cave-in protection at 5 feet deep or more, unless the trench is in stable rock. Sand and gravel rate as Type C under those rules, the class that needs the flattest slopes.
Rhode Island law requires a notice to Dig Safe before machine digging within 100 feet of a buried utility line. Before the notice, the dig area gets marked in white. The notice goes in at least 72 hours ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. Digging has to start within 30 days of the notice.
Each utility then marks its own lines with paint or stakes. Red is electric, yellow is gas, orange is phone or cable and blue is water. A mark means the line sits within a foot and a half to either side. Inside that strip, the line gets uncovered by hand.
Private lines get no marks. Power to a detached garage or the pipe out to a septic tank belongs to the owner. A town water or sewer system that is not a Dig Safe member needs its own call. Tell us where your own lines run before the machine starts.

Call or text (401) 474-8926 and tell us the town and the job. Photos of the problem or the lot help.
We come out to see the site and how a machine gets in. On a problem call, we look for the cause first.
The quote comes to you in writing, with the work spelled out. A septic design goes to the state for approval before the install.
After a Dig Safe (811) call, the utilities mark their buried lines before any machine digs. Then we do the work the quote describes.
Where we dug, we backfill and grade, and we tell you what we did. A new septic system goes into use once the state issues its Certificate of Conformance.

South County Septic did an excellent job replacing our old septic system and leach-field. Michael surveyed the property, designed a new system, installed and worked with the RI DEM with no issues. I highly recommend this business.
Michael was great! Picked up right away and was able to come within the hour to evaluate. Immediately got into motion additional resources we might need to come that day and solved the problem. Very informative and great to work with. Highly recommend.
Was referred out to Michael after an emergency waterline break that flooded our basement. He was there every step of the way and answered all the questions we had. Michael let us know what was happening during the process and could not have been happier with the outcome. Great price and great customer service! Highly recommend if anyone is in need of their services
