Site work takes a raw lot and makes it ready to build on. As a site work contractor, South County Septic and Excavation Services does site preparation for new homes and commercial projects. We clear the lot and strip the topsoil. Then we grade the ground to the levels on your plan, with erosion controls in place during the work.
We prepare sites across South County and the rest of Rhode Island. On a lot with no sewer, the septic system design is part of the site plan from the start. Soil tests set the spot for the leach field, and we handle the septic system installation too. Call or text (401) 474-8926, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Land clearing comes first: we take down the trees and brush in the work area, then pull the stumps. North Kingstown's onsite wastewater management plan places glacial till under Slocum and Saunderstown. That till is a thin layer of boulders and finer soil over bedrock. Clearing on that ground can turn up boulders along with the stumps.
Next we strip the topsoil and stockpile it on site for the finish grade. Merrimac sandy loam is the most common soil in North Kingstown, the same plan says. It typically carries eight inches of topsoil.
Town erosion rules in Rhode Island build on a model ordinance written into state law. That model says to keep existing trees wherever possible. The ground under a kept tree's outer branches, its dripline, gets fenced or roped off from the machines.
Rough grading is a grading contractor's first pass over the lot. We cut the high spots and fill the low ones until the lot matches the plan. Merrimac and Hinckley soils drain fast, and the town's plan says cut slopes in them are usually unstable. The model ordinance also asks that new slopes stay as gentle as the site allows.
Finish grading comes once the house is up and the foundation is backfilled. The model ordinance says drainage should run away from buildings, and the finish grade sets that slope. The topsoil from the stockpile goes back on top.
Some lots hold water that grading alone cannot move. There, French drains and dry wells can carry it away. The model ordinance asks that drainage go in early, before clearing if possible.
Erosion controls stay in place from the first cut to the final grade. The model ordinance asks for the smallest bare area possible at any one time. It also calls for mulch or temporary vegetation on bare soil and stockpiles.
Under that ordinance, the town building official decides whether a project needs a soil erosion and sediment control plan. The official weighs the slope, the drainage, the soils and how close the work sits to water. In North Kingstown, a building permit application needs a site plan showing the septic system and the water line.
A raw lot needs a way in for trucks and machines. We build access roads and driveways to gravel, and asphalt paving is quoted separately by a paving contractor. Utility trenches for the water and sewer lines are part of site work too. We also install a new water service line from the meter or the well to the house.

Call or text (401) 474-8926 and tell us the town and the job. Photos of the problem or the lot help.
We come out to see the site and how a machine gets in. On a problem call, we look for the cause first.
The quote comes to you in writing, with the work spelled out. A septic design goes to the state for approval before the install.
After a Dig Safe (811) call, the utilities mark their buried lines before any machine digs. Then we do the work the quote describes.
Where we dug, we backfill and grade, and we tell you what we did. A new septic system goes into use once the state issues its Certificate of Conformance.

Learn MoreWe install conventional septic systems and advanced treatment systems, such as nitrogen-reducing units. The soil and the state's rules decide which one fits the lot.
We take on small residential repairs and large commercial site work. On new construction, we work closely with the builder and the engineer.

South County Septic did an excellent job replacing our old septic system and leach-field. Michael surveyed the property, designed a new system, installed and worked with the RI DEM with no issues. I highly recommend this business.
Michael was great! Picked up right away and was able to come within the hour to evaluate. Immediately got into motion additional resources we might need to come that day and solved the problem. Very informative and great to work with. Highly recommend.
Was referred out to Michael after an emergency waterline break that flooded our basement. He was there every step of the way and answered all the questions we had. Michael let us know what was happening during the process and could not have been happier with the outcome. Great price and great customer service! Highly recommend if anyone is in need of their services
