Design and Install

Septic Design and Installation Under One Roof

South County Septic and Excavation Services designs and installs septic systems for homes and businesses across Rhode Island. We work closely with homeowners, builders and engineers. On new construction, our excavation work covers the foundation hole and the utility trenches too.

On a new lot, test holes show the soil layers and how high the groundwater rises in the wet season. Those readings shape our septic system design: the type of system and the size and spot of the leach field. The design then goes to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM). The install starts once RIDEM approves it in writing.

Much of North Kingstown sits on sandy, gravelly outwash, and the town's drinking water comes from groundwater. The state's rules set the bottom of a leach field at least 3 feet above the seasonal high groundwater. Where the water sits higher, the design may call for fill or a raised leach field. The systems we install include F.A.S.T. and Advantex treatment units, Eljen In-Drains, bottomless sand filters and trench and stone fields.

South County Septic did an excellent job replacing our old septic system and leach-field. Michael surveyed the property, designed a new system, installed and worked with the RI DEM with no issues. I highly recommend this business.

Michael was great! Picked up right away and was able to come within the hour to evaluate. Immediately got into motion additional resources we might need to come that day and solved the problem. Very informative and great to work with. Highly recommend.

Was referred out to Michael after an emergency waterline break that flooded our basement. He was there every step of the way and answered all the questions we had. Michael let us know what was happening during the process and could not have been happier with the outcome. Great price and great customer service! Highly recommend if anyone is in need of their services

Samantha Bomzera year ago · Google review

Michael was excellent. He replaced a main water mine to my rental property. Prompt, on time and does great work. I am someone who is extremely picky when hiring contractors for anything. He checked a lot of boxes when we first met answering questions and demonstrating his knowledge. Highly recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About Your Septic System or Site Work?

Here are common questions about septic systems, cesspools and excavation around North Kingstown and the rest of Rhode Island. If yours is not here, call or text and we will answer it.

Call (401) 474-8926

Does a septic system need state approval in Rhode Island?
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) approves the design in writing before a septic system goes in. The system's designer inspects the work at the key stages before it is covered. RIDEM then issues a Certificate of Conformance, and the system goes into use after that. We work under Contractor Registration #2681 and DEM License: L1362.
What kinds of septic systems do you install?
We install conventional systems, with a septic tank, a distribution box and a leach field. The design sets the leach field type: trench and stone, flow diffusers or a shallow narrow drain field. Harder sites may need a bottomless sand filter or an advanced treatment unit. In the Salt Pond and Narrow River critical resource areas, RIDEM requires nitrogen-reducing treatment for new homes and most repairs.
How big a septic tank does my house need?
Rhode Island's septic rules set the minimum by bedrooms. A house with up to three bedrooms needs at least a 1,000-gallon tank, plus 250 gallons per added bedroom. A four-bedroom house starts at 1,250 gallons, and every new tank has two compartments. The leach field is sized from the bedroom count and the soil.
Do I have to replace my cesspool?
Under Rhode Island's Cesspool Act, a cesspool must be replaced within 12 months after the house is sold. The law has exceptions, such as some family transfers and towns with their own cesspool phase-out rules. Cesspools within 200 feet of the tidal shore or a public water supply faced a January 1, 2014 deadline. The fix is a new septic system, or a sewer connection where a public sewer reaches the lot.
When does a septic system need to be replaced?
The state's rules call a system failed when sewage backs into the house or surfaces over the system. A tank that needs pumping more than twice a year counts too. Some problems are one part, like a crushed pipe or a failed pump, and septic system repair covers those. A failed leach field can mean a new field or a full septic system replacement.
Do I need a new septic system to add a bedroom?
Not always, but an added bedroom in Rhode Island needs a septic application to RIDEM first. A cesspool or a pre-1968 system must be upgraded when a renovation adds a bedroom or a floor. A newer system may pass as is or need a bigger tank or leach field. The town building office waits on RIDEM's approval before it issues the permit.
How does pricing work?
We look at the job first, then put the quote in writing with the work spelled out. On a new system, the soil, the system type, the tank size and machine access drive the price. A high water table can call for fill, and RIDEM notes that advanced systems cost more than conventional ones. On a repair, the price follows the part that failed.
What area do you serve?
Our service area covers all of Rhode Island, with North Kingstown at the center. That takes in Warwick, South Kingstown, Coventry, Westerly and Narragansett, along with East Greenwich, Exeter, Charlestown, Richmond and Hopkinton. Jamestown, West Warwick, Cranston and Newport are part of it too. See the towns we serve for the town pages and the full list.
What work do you do besides septic systems?
We handle sewer line repair and installation, water line repair and installation, and drain cleaning with hydro jetting. On new construction, we dig foundations and take a raw lot to a graded, drained site. We also build drainage systems such as French drains and dry wells, plus retaining walls and walkways. We work on residential and commercial properties.
